Provide a safe environment for the youth to learn socially acceptable behaviors. This is done through supervision of the youth and teaching new ways of dealing with situations and people. Provide physical, medical and emotional care to the youth while they are in the facility. Responsibilities will include maintaining proper supervision, interpersonal relations and public social skills. Monitor health and well-being of the youths by alerting the nurse and/or doctor of health concerns, properly scheduling, securing, counting and dispensing medications and monitoring suicide risk levels and following through with the action needed. Supervise and observe the youth. Complete intakes and dismissals according to the intake checklist and as training. Maintain accuracy in spelling and record keeping. Handwriting must be legible. Be a positive role model for appropriate behaviors. Communicate and work as a team in a professional, respectful, positive and constructive manner. Manage youth behavior by using the facility’s behavior management program. Regular attendance and good punctuality essential. Write termination summaries/progress reports. Overtime as required. Assist in maintaining shelter cleanliness. Write incident reports. Perform minor maintenance and housekeeping duties (i.e., painting, cleaning, laundry, etc.). Assist in meal preparation and meal clean-up. Teach and assist health and hygiene skills to youth and assist in delousing. De-escalate out of control youth and physically restrain youth when necessary, respond to crisis and emergency situations. Inventory and document youth property. Administer first aid when needed. Communicate with family members to apprise them of situations with youth. Assist in training fellow staff members. Make and monitor phone calls for youth. Collect urine specimens for drug screens or other tests. Back-up detention employees during crisis situations and participate in emergency drills. Properly handle and dispose of bio-hazardous materials. Act as a liaison between social workers, schools, law enforcement and other professionals. Complete filing for youth files and copy forms as needed. Testify in court as requested. Monitor use of razors and other sharp objects. Attend court hearings, administrative reviews and evaluation of staff. Maintain shelter transportation vehicles, cleaning when needed.
